Rome, October 14 (Adnkronos) – "Eighteen years ago, the Democratic Party was born, thanks above all to the generous work of Walter Veltroni: much more than an intuition. It was an attempt to connect public opinion and political participation, to contribute to the country's development with a clear reformist project of change, to unite the best republican political traditions for a new cultural commitment, to offer Italians a renewed and democratic constitutional evolution of popular parties."
The Vice President of the European Parliament, Pina Picierno, wrote this on social media.
"Have we succeeded? Only partially. The resistance to change and reform in this country is insurmountable and unsurpassable. And not having been able to fully respond to those opportunities and needs is the main cause of distance from politics, which even these days is a reason for urgent reflection and course corrections," Picierno continues. "Eighteen years later, I continue—with shoes decidedly less ugly than the ones I wore then, with a lot more grey hair but with the same gaze—to seek the best path for the common good."
"And along with so many others, I'm doing it without an abacus because, as Alfredo Reichlin taught, 'an electoral bloc is not enough. We need a great party.' Happy birthday to us," Picierno concludes.
