Suicides in Italian prisons continue unabated. An inmate took his own life in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere facility

He shared a cell with another person and, during the night of November 2, he took his own life. The magistrate ordered an autopsy on the body of a 53-year-old prisoner from Campania, after the man committed suicide in the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere: this is the tenth victim in Campania since the beginning of the year.

As reported by Repubblica, Samuele Ciambriello, regional guarantor of people subjected to restrictive measures of freedom, confirmed that the suicide occurred in the facility located in the municipality in the province of Caserta. Also listing the numbers of suicide since the beginning of the year both in the entire Campania Region and at a national level: there are ten prisoners who have taken their own lives in Campania while the number reaches 78 when looking at all Italian prisons; with 1335 confirmed suicide attempts as of mid-September, 100 of which in Campania.

The guarantor also recalled the President's appeals Mattarella and of the Pope but also of the guarantors and associations, unheard by politics to date. The criminal chambers have planned, in concert with various associations and with the guarantors, a mobilization against the Security Decree for next week in order to highlight the dramatic consequences that could affect the penitentiary system, already in enormous difficulty.
