Seasonal Flu 2025: An Emergency in Italian Emergency Rooms

Crowded Emergency Room During Seasonal Flu 2025

Seasonal flu in 2025 leads to increased emergency room visits, with consequences for the healthcare system.

A worrying increase in flu cases

In 2025, seasonal influenza has affected an increasing number of people, bringing with it debilitating symptoms such as high fever, severe cold, and fatigue. This increase has had a direct impact on emergency rooms, where there are increasingly more visits, many of which are not classified as serious. White and green codes, indicating less urgent situations, are saturating health facilities, forcing staff to manage patients waiting for hospitalization in precarious conditions.

Pressure on emergency rooms and interminable waits

The situation is alarming: the national average wait in emergency rooms is about 30 hours, with over 70 patients waiting for a bed in the largest centers. This scenario not only slows down the health system, but also puts the health of patients at risk, forced to remain in crowded and unhygienic environments. Virologist Matteo Bassetti, speaking on the program “Mattino Cinque News,” underlined the importance of not going to the emergency room for flu symptoms, highlighting that home care is often sufficient.

Influenza management: a task for community medicine

Bassetti clarified that influenza must be managed by community medicine, community homes and general practitioners. “Going to the hospital with influenza means feeling worse than at home,” he said, suggesting that fever can be effectively treated with antipyretics and anti-inflammatories. The main symptoms of this year’s influenza include a persistent fever, which can last 3 to 5 days, followed by a bothersome cough that can last for another 4 or 5 days. In the absence of respiratory complications, resting at home is the best solution.
