Sergio Mattarella's warning
During a lectio magistralis at the University of Marseille, President Sergio Mattarella issued a clear warning about the risks of protectionism and the weakening of international organizations. Without ever naming them directly, he pointed the finger at influential figures such as Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Elon Musk, highlighting how their actions can threaten global stability. Mattarella stressed that Europe must decide whether to be an active player in international politics or remain a mere object in the hands of foreign powers.
The challenges of protectionism
The president drew attention to the history of the twentieth century, warning against repeating the mistakes of the past. “Today we are witnessing economic crises, protectionism and distrust among global players,” he said, recalling the failure of the League of Nations. The United States’ failure to join that body, despite Woodrow Wilson’s support, is a warning we cannot ignore. History teaches us that isolationism and closure never lead to positive results.
A united and strong Europe
Mattarella urged Europe not to accept a passive role, but to become a protagonist on the international scene. “Can it accept being crushed between oligarchies and autocracies?” he asked rhetorically, underlining the importance of a united and cohesive response. His vision is clear: Europe must unite to address global challenges, avoiding falling into the trap of vassalage. The creation of a stronger Union is essential to guarantee the sovereignty and dignity of the European peoples.
The risk of appeasement
In a particularly incisive passage, Mattarella recalled that the strategy of appeasement did not work in 1938 and that an abandonment of responsibility can lead to disastrous consequences. “Firmness could have avoided war,” he said, inviting reflection on whether a different approach could be adopted today. History, according to the president, must not be a burden, but a guide for future decisions.
Criticism of the new pirates
Finally, Mattarella denounced the rise of “neo-feudatories of the Third Millennium,” describing figures such as Elon Musk as new pirates who threaten democratic sovereignty. These individuals, according to the president, see international organizations as obstacles to their profits and not as tools for the common good. It is therefore essential that Europe wakes up and acts with determination to defend its values and autonomy.
