Trump and Putin hold phone call: meeting planned in Budapest

Washington, Oct. 17 (askanews) – A new summit between Trump and Putin will likely take place in Budapest in two weeks. After days of tension at a distance, the two leaders held a phone call, as the American president himself announced. The two-hour conversation with the Russian president, which Trump called "very productive," said that "great progress" had been made.

After the Alaska summit, Trump repeatedly criticized Putin for showing no willingness to stop Russian aggression against Ukraine.

"Marco Rubio will meet with his counterpart Lavrov, and they will meet very soon. They will set a date and place shortly. Perhaps everything is already decided. They have already spoken," he said from the Oval Office, explaining that he also discussed trade between Russia and the United States with Putin once the conflict is over.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelensky has arrived in Washington to request the long-range Tomahawk missiles. Putin, however, says they "would harm the prospects for peace." And Trump, after his overtures in recent days, is holding back:

"We talked about it, but we also need Tomahawks. We have a lot of them, but we need them because they're very good. We can't run out of supplies," he said, dampening Zelensky's enthusiasm.
