The Chamber of Deputies turned into a real battlefield, with shouts and insults that resounded among the benches. President Lorenzo Fontana struggled to maintain order, forcing the work to be suspended several times. The cause of this tension was the intervention of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose words on the Ventotene Manifesto were deemed "unacceptable" by the opposition.
Words that ignite the debate
The session began with a general discussion on communications in view of the EU Council. Meloni, after taking notes and with the government benches in full attendance, took the floor to respond. Initially, her speech slipped by without much controversy, but it was at the end that things degenerated. Reading some passages from the Manifesto, she stated: “I don’t know if this is your Europe but it’s certainly not mine.” These words triggered an immediate reaction from the opposition, which responded with shouts and whistles, while members of the majority applauded loudly.

Tensions further increased when Minister Foti attempted to read the government’s opinions, but the din of the protests made it impossible for him to speak. When the session resumed, the opposition accused the prime minister of being ashamed and of having to apologize. Very harsh interventions were recorded, with Marco Grimaldi of Avs who urged Meloni to kneel in front of the men and women present in the chamber. The situation reached a climax when the leader of the FdI group, Galeazzo Bignami, exclaimed: “Enough!”, sparking further protests from the minority benches.

However, the session was now compromised, with the prime minister absent when it resumed. Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano tried to defend the situation, explaining that Meloni was flying to Brussels. Tension in the chamber reached such levels that a representative of FdI joked about the possibility of destroying a copy of the Ventotene Manifesto to ease the pressure. The situation also saw Angelo Bonelli wave the manifesto in favor of the government, while Giuseppe Conte and Elly Schlein expressed severe criticism. The final vote on the resolutions confirmed the division between the two sides, leaving a poisoned climate that will certainly influence the next challenges in the chamber.
