A symbolic gesture for Europe
Participants' statements
Nicola Zingaretti, head of the Democratic Party's delegation in Europe, expressed his satisfaction with the participation in the event, stating: "I don't think those who didn't come are against it, perhaps they had other things to do. I'm happy to be there though". These words highlight a climate of openness and inclusion, despite the absences. Luciano Nobili of Italia Viva added: "For us it is important to be there, to testify our presence", underlining the value of union and cohesion among the political forces that support the European idea.
The significance of Ventotene in European history
Ventotene is not just a geographical place, but a symbol of hope and of building a common future. Here, in 1941, Spinelli and other political exiles wrote the famous “Ventotene Manifesto”, a document that inspired the birth of the European Union. The choice to commemorate Spinelli in this context is not accidental; it represents a reminder of the values of freedom, democracy and solidarity that should guide contemporary Europe. In a period of growing nationalism and divisions, the message of Ventotene resonates with particular urgency, inviting us to reflect on the importance of a united and supportive Europe.
