The Continuity of Pope Francis' Message: A Call to Radicality

The president of Libera hopes for a successor who will continue the work of Pope Francis

A legacy to carry forward

Don Luigi Ciotti, president of Libera, recently expressed his opinion on the future of the Catholic Church, underlining the importance of keeping alive the radical nature of Pope Francis' message. During the presentation of Nando Dalla Chiesa's book at the State University of Milan, Ciotti stated that the next pontiff must continue on the path traced by the current Pope, who embodied the Gospel not only through words, but also with concrete actions in favor of the weakest.

The challenges of the new pontiff

Ciotti highlighted how, despite Pope Francis’s global recognition, there have been significant obstacles to his mission, including within the Church itself. “We hope that the Holy Spirit can guide the new Pope towards choices that reflect evangelical values,” he said. According to him, it is essential that Francis’s successor not only embraces the message of peace and justice, but puts it into practice, addressing contemporary challenges such as the issue of migrants and social justice.

A Call to Responsibility

Don Ciotti's message is clear: the radicality of the Gospel must not be just an ideal, but a reality to be lived daily. "The word of God is uncomfortable and provocative," he said, inviting everyone to reflect on how they can take on greater responsibilities in society. This call to responsibility is particularly relevant in a historical moment in which social inequalities and injustices are increasingly evident. The Church, according to Ciotti, must be a beacon of hope and an agent of change, not just an institution that looks to the sky.
