The context of the European defence plan
The positions of the reformists
The reformists of the Democratic Party argue that the European defense plan is a necessary step to ensure the security of the European Union in an increasingly complex geopolitical context. In their opinion, military cooperation between member states is essential to address global challenges, such as threats from third countries and humanitarian crises. Their position is in line with that of the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament, which has expressed clear and firm support for Von der Leyen's project. This approach, however, is not without criticism, as some members of the party fear that an increase in military spending could divert resources from other crucial areas, such as health and education.
Elly Schlein's criticisms
In contrast, Secretary Schlein took a more cautious stance, stressing the need for in-depth reflection before committing to a rearmament plan. Her proposed abstention during the vote in Strasbourg was interpreted as a clear sign of disagreement with the reformist line. Schlein stressed that the PD must present itself united and clear on issues of such importance, stating that the resolution that the party will present in the chamber must contain a clear rejection of the rearmament envisaged by Von der Leyen. The PD leader warned that there can be no ambiguity on this point, as the party's position must reflect the values of peace and cooperation that characterize it.
The implications for the future of the Democratic Party
This fracture within the Democratic Party could have significant repercussions on its political future. The division between reformists and critics is not only a question of defense strategy, but also touches the ideological foundations of the party. While reformists seek to position the PD as a responsible and proactive actor in European security, critics warn that excessive militarism could alienate the party's traditional electorate, which identifies with values of peace and social justice. The ability of the PD to find a balance between these two souls will be crucial for its political relevance in the coming years.
