The future of Italian exports between protectionism and global opportunities

President Mattarella warns of the risks of protectionism for Italian exports.

The current context of Italian exports

In recent years, Italian exports have shown signs of growth, thanks to the quality of their products and their consolidated reputation in the world. However, new clouds are gathering on the horizon, bringing with them the risk of unmotivated protectionism that could compromise sectors of excellence such as wine and oil.

These concerns were expressed by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during the 44th Forum of the Culture of Oil and Wine, held in Rome. His analysis highlights how protectionism can bring Italy back to an obsolete agricultural model, similar to that of the early twentieth century.

The consequences of protectionism

Producers' associations have legitimately expressed concern for the fate of Italian exports. Protectionist measures, if implemented, would not only harm local producers, but would also give a boost to so-called "Italian sounding" products, that is, those products that, while not being authentically Italian, exploit the appeal of the Italian brand. This phenomenon could have devastating consequences for Italian production chains, since consumers from other continents may not easily give up the tastes they have learned to appreciate.

The value of international cooperation

Mattarella stressed the importance of trade and interdependence as a guarantee of peace. History teaches us that the opposition between hostile markets has led to much more serious conflicts. Open markets, on the contrary, create a network of collaborations that, in the common interest, protect stability and peace. In this context, it is essential that Italian producers continue to measure themselves against the growing international dimension, fearlessly facing previously unknown markets. Italian products, thanks to their quality, are already leaders in many of these areas.

Looking to the future with optimism

The future of Italian exports cannot be built on nostalgia or temptations of an idealized past. It is essential to recognize that today foods are healthier and more controlled than in the past. Innovation and quality must guide the sector, allowing Italy to maintain its leading position in the global market. Only through an open and collaborative approach will it be possible to face future challenges and seize the opportunities that the international market offers.
