The European context and reunification
During the European Political Community summit in Tirana, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni clearly expressed her vision of a united and cohesive Europe. According to Meloni, Albania, like Italy, Serbia and Norway, is an integral part of a Europe that must work towards reunification.
This concept of European reunification is not limited to a geographical or political issue, but also embraces the idea of union between different peoples, who, despite their differences, share fundamental values. The Prime Minister used an effective metaphor, comparing the different European peoples to the fingers of a hand, each unique but all essential to the functionality of the whole.
Freedom and heroism of the Ukrainian people
Meloni then shifted the focus to the war in Ukraine, underlining how the heroism and determination of the Ukrainian people represent the very essence of Europe. The Prime Minister stated that there is nothing more European than a people willing to sacrifice everything for their freedom. This call to Ukrainian heroism serves not only to recognize the courage of a people in struggle, but also to strengthen the European identity, which is based on freedom and human dignity. The Prime Minister reiterated Italy's support for Ukraine, stressing that Europe's security and freedom depend on the end of the war and the restoration of legality.
Towards a ceasefire and a peace agreement
At a time of high international tension, Meloni urged that recent difficulties in negotiations should not be seen as a setback, but rather as an opportunity to resolutely insist on an unconditional ceasefire. She stressed the importance of a peace agreement that guarantees the security of Ukraine, highlighting Italy's willingness to do whatever is necessary to achieve this goal. The prime minister also highlighted how the world is starting to understand who is truly willing to negotiate for peace and who, on the contrary, is not. This message of hope and determination is crucial at a time when European stability is being severely tested.
