The current context of European defence
At a time when geopolitical tensions are rising, the need for a common defense in Europe has become more urgent than ever. Mario Draghi, former President of the European Central Bank and current Special Advisor to the President of the European Commission, recently highlighted how the continent's security is threatened by external factors, in particular by Russian aggression in Ukraine.
This situation requires a radical rethinking of defense strategies, which can no longer be left at the mercy of national choices.
A coordinated approach to safety
Draghi has proposed the creation of a unified chain of command that could coordinate the armed forces of the various member states. This approach aims to overcome national divisions and ensure a more effective response to common threats. The fragmentation of defense investments, which currently leads many European countries to purchase weapons from the United States, is seen as an obstacle to building true European strategic autonomy. Focusing on a few advanced military platforms rather than on numerous national projects could lead to greater efficiency and significant savings.
Economic challenges and European competitiveness
In addition to security issues, Draghi highlighted the economic challenges facing Europe. High energy costs and protectionist US trade policies are putting European companies under pressure, making it difficult for them to compete globally. To address these issues, it is essential for the European Union to adopt policies that reduce energy bills for families and businesses, thereby fostering economic growth and innovation. Only through coordinated action and a common vision can Europe ensure a prosperous and secure future for its citizens.
