Trump Leaves G7 Early: Dinner With Leaders, Then Returns to Washington
"I have to go back, you probably see what I see and I have to go back as soon as possible.”
After dinner with the leaders of the G7, Donald Trump surprisingly announced his early return to Washington, 24 hours before the end of the Kananaskis summit. He urgently convened the Security Council in the situation room and asked for immediate contact with Iranian emissaries. He will not meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky, who is expected for a session with Prime Minister Meloni and NATO Secretary Mark Rutte.
About the negotiations with Iran, Trump expressed confidence that a deal was possible, arguing that Tehran would be crazy not to sign and that the talks have already started. In a subsequent post on Truth, he took a more direct tone, criticizing the failed agreement:
“Iran should have signed the agreement that I suggested they sign. What a disgrace, what a waste of human life. Let me put it bluntly: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. I have said it over and over again. Everyone should evacuate Tehran immediately".
The president has instructed his team to quickly begin talks with Iranian officials to assess whether Tehran is serious about using diplomacy to resolve its conflict with Israel, CNN reports, citing sources familiar with the matter.
G7, Trump leaves after face-to-face with Meloni: priority to Iran-Israel conflict
According to what was reported by Palazzo Chigi, during an informal meeting held on a bench at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, the President of the Council Giorgia Meloni had a conversation with US President Donald Trump. During the conversation, Meloni reportedly underlined the importance of an agreement on trade negotiations between the European Union and the United States, also dwelling on the prospects of the next NATO summit scheduled for The Hague.
The comparison would also have allowed to address the most recent developments in Iran, with the shared goal of relaunch diplomatic dialogue. The Prime Minister finally reiterated the need, at this stage, to promote the achievement of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
During the bilateral meetings held during the summit, and in particular in the informal conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Donald Trump also addressed the issue of sanctions against Russia. According to leaks, he expressed skepticism about the effectiveness and costs of punitive measures, stressing that Europe is calling for new sanctions but has not yet acted concretely, and that such instruments entail huge costs of billions of dollars.
