Rome, March 20 (Adnkronos) – "There is something offensive in the words of President Meloni to the Chamber because they clearly wanted to hit one of the places where Europe was born, anticipating the spirit that in some way then became clear through the construction process". This was said by the former Minister of Labor and Pd exponent, Andrea Orlando, on Tagada' on La7.
"Because those who were reflecting on an island without knowing what was happening in the world, without having the possibility of discussing, were reflecting on the disasters produced by nationalism and were saying that the only way to ensure that there are no more wars is to move in the direction of a Europe that, after having generated the first and second world wars, only if it pacifies, if it builds a federal dimension, will be able to prevent other wars in the future. The heroism of that thought lies in the fact that it occurs precisely at the most desperate moment, when Hitler seemed to be winning the war. So there is an enormous greatness in those pages that the Prime Minister wanted to mock. I am offended because I recognize myself in that perspective, I am not surprised that Meloni, among Spinelli's torturers, prefers Spinelli's torturers, I think it is an established fact and she has only reiterated it".
"I think it's hard not to react to something like this. I think judging a manifesto written in prison in '41 - Orlando added - with our eyes is stupid and provocative. Moreover, contrasting De Gasperi with Spinelli is another stupidity because it was the founding fathers who wanted to reconnect with the Ventotene manifesto despite coming from different cultures. It is no coincidence that one of the most important halls of the European Parliament was named after Altiero Spinelli and was voted for by all the political families, in an era in which the most important family at the parliamentary level was the popular one, which if it had seen Spinelli as an enemy would not have named one of the most important halls after him".
