Adnkronos Washington, April 24 (Adnkronos) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied on X an article in 'Politico' regarding the discussion at the White House on the lifting of sanctions on Nord Stream 2. "This is unequivocally false," he wrote on the social network. "Neither Steve Witkoff nor I have spoken about the lifting of sanctions against Russia as part of an agreement with Ukraine.
This is bad journalistic practice. If 'Politico' had any integrity, it would completely retract this fake news story."
According to the US newspaper, White House special envoy Witkoff is the main promoter of sanctions relief. Both Rubio and Witkoff denied, in a joint statement released by the White House, that there were ever any discussions about easing sanctions. "This is false. None of us have ever talked about lifting sanctions on Russia as part of a peace agreement with Ukraine," their statement read.
