Tyreek hill, an NFL star, was stopped, handcuffed and beaten by Miami police officers on Sunday for speeding and verbal abuse. Video of the stop has fueled controversy over the incident.
Tyreek Hill and Police Violence
La Police Miami Dade Police Department released videos documenting the arrest of Tyreek Hill, hours before the Miami Dolphins' first game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Released shortly after, the player still took part in the first game of the season, even managing to score a touchdown. However, the video released by the Police of the arrest has fueled controversy regarding the violence suffered by the player.
Bodycam video shows 3 minutes of violence and assault. Tyreek Hill is stopped in his McLaren with the policeman warning him of theexcessive speed. Shortly after, a heated argument ensued because Hill refused to keep his window down during the checks. At this point, the officer allegedly opened the door and threw Hill out of the car:
“I'm going out! I'm going out!”, the athlete screams. "When we tell you to do something, you do it. Do you understand?" the man answers.
The officers pull him out of the car and then handcuff him, holding him on the ground. One officer tries to get the athlete to kneel, but Hill responds:
“Wait, bro. I just had knee surgery.” However, as he is speaking, another officer comes up behind him and puts an arm around his chest and throws him to the ground.
Tyreek Hill Breaks Silence After Game
After Tyreek Hill was released and played his match, but after the match he said:
"I'm still in shock, it was a crazy moment because it all happened so quickly. I couldn't even fully understand everything that was going on. I wasn't moving fast because of the injuries I had, so maybe the officers thought I wasn't following their timing.. I kept the car window down, I cooperated with them, I immediately gave them my document”. These were the player's words to The Source.
Miami Dolphins statement
The American football team has released an official statement for the violence suffered by his player:
"We are saddened by the conduct excessively aggressive e violent held by police officers against Tyreek hill, Calais campbell e Jonnu Smith before yesterday’s game. It’s both infuriating and heartbreaking to see the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility toward these players, but it’s also a reminder that not all situations like this end peacefully.”
Finally, the team urges those in charge to take swift and strong action against the officers who have engaged in such despicable behavior.
