(Adnkronos) – "I'm ready for the primaries, a courageous instrument that benefits politics. I'm waiting for the coalition to clarify its path and timeline; it seems to me the scenario is taking shape. I'm in." These are the words of Mario Calabresi, who says he's available to run for mayor of Milan with the center-left. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, the journalist and writer explains the reasons for his choice: "It's necessary to re-engage the Milanese to overcome fatigue and disillusionment," he says.
We need a positive energy. And we need broad popular legitimacy to govern the city's future: this is the real challenge."
The polls already show him ahead: "They indicate trends," he observes, "but I don't give them too much weight. My poll is the curiosity and interest of people on the street, at the market, and at the meetings I have."
Meanwhile, names like Pierfrancesco Majorino, Anna Scavuzzo, Emmanuel Conte, Carlotta Cossutta, Lorenzo Pacini, and Tommaso Goisis are in the running for the primaries. Calabresi says, "It's wonderful that so much energy has been put into play. These are all people of great value." And even if "some fear divisions and fractures in such a crowded race," he hopes that won't be the case.
Also because "if the primaries were to become a showdown, rather than a good opportunity for discussion and ideas, it would be a defeat for Milan and the center-left. With the right-wing wind blowing in Europe today, we can't afford to make mistakes."
Regarding her decision to enter politics, she clarifies: "I've been thinking about it for a long time, because I've seen walls grow, fractures form, and fears arise." She adds: "Milan today needs to be listened to, cared for, and then made clear choices. There's the Milan that's running fast and the one that's really struggling, but a city is first and foremost the community of its inhabitants. You need to have the sensitivity to speak to both worlds and the tools to mend rifts and bridge distances."
