Lucrezia Ciotti Polls reopened this morning in the Reggio Calabria-Locri constituency for the second and final day of the by-election for the Chamber of Deputies. Voters are called to choose the new MP to fill the seat vacated by Francesco Cannizzaro, following his election as mayor of Reggio Calabria.
Polls will remain open until 3:00 PM, when the counting of ballots will begin. Four candidates are vying for the seat in Montecitorio, while turnout as of 11:00 PM yesterday was 14,97%.
Polls reopen for the Chamber of Deputies by-election: voting continues until 15 p.m.
The polling stations in the single-member constituency 05 Reggio Calabria-Locri were reopened at 7 am this morning , where the second and final day of by- elections is taking place to fill the seat in the Chamber of Deputies left vacant following the resignation of Francesco Cannizzaro , a member of Forza Italia.
Polls will remain open until 3:00 PM , when the counting begins. The election involves 71 municipalities , with 487 polling stations . Turnout at 11:00 PM yesterday was 14,97% , while at 7:00 PM it had reached 10,26% and at 12:00 PM it was 3,43%. The comparison with previous elections should be read considering that in 2022, voting took place in a single day: at the same time, turnout was 49,40%, while at 7:00 PM it had reached 35,48%.
Voters must present themselves at their polling station with their voter card and valid ID and can cast their vote by marking an X next to the candidate or the symbol of the list supporting them. The polling station will be assigned directly to the candidate who receives the most votes, without a second round.
The seat vacated by Cannizzaro and the challenge between four candidates
The consultation arose from the need to replace Francesco Cannizzaro , who had won the constituency in the 2022 general elections. After being elected mayor of Reggio Calabria in May 2026 with 65,68% of the vote , the Forza Italia representative was forced to leave Montecitorio due to the incompatibility between the two offices, formalizing his resignation on July 22. The vote involves an electorate of 345.788 people , including 58.729 residents abroad , according to the data reported in the documentation relating to the consultation.
The territories involved include, in addition to Reggio Calabria, Villa San Giovanni, Scilla, Bagnara Calabra, Melito di Porto Salvo, and Palmi. Contesting for the seat are Fabio Roscioli of Forza Italia and the center-right, Domenico Giannetta of National Future, Francesco Antonio Benedetto of Campo largo, and Francesco Toscano of Sovereign Popular Democracy.
The election also holds particular significance for Futuro Nazionale , the movement founded by General Roberto Vannacci , which is running for the first time with its own symbol. Giannetta's candidacy, which garnered over 10 votes in the last regional elections, is seen as a potential competitor within the center-right. The election campaign was also marked by controversy, including a post by Vannacci criticizing Calabria Regional President Roberto Occhiuto , accompanied by a doctored image of the governor's partner.
