Christine Lagarde is one of the most powerful women in Europe. For seven years, she has led the European Central Bank, the institution that sets the cost of money in the Eurozone, and now she has decided to step down, almost nine months early. The reason is unusual: she wants to regain her freedom of expression, something a person in her role cannot do, constrained by the institution's neutrality and independence.
The question therefore arises: what is the Frenchwoman saying that's so important that she's resigning from the presidency of the European Central Bank? And is it a coincidence that just two months after her departure, France will elect a new president, with two extremist Eurosceptics clearly ahead?
