Rome, September 14 (askanews) – Five Star Movement President Giuseppe Conte participated in the demonstration in front of the Senate against the electoral reform measure that quadruples the signature requirement for new lists. According to Conte, the overall threshold would reach approximately 400.000 signatures and would constitute a barrier designed to prevent new political groups from entering Parliament.
The leader of the Five Star Movement announced a fight against the measure. "I'm here, and on behalf of the Movement," Conte said, "I join this protest because we're talking about an antidemocratic, illiberal, and unconstitutional law. The barrier they erected overnight to prevent new political groups from entering Parliament is downright obscene.

For Conte, "this isn't how you defend democratic values; this only defends the political class that already sits in Parliament.

It's right to set a minimum threshold for collecting signatures, but we send these anti-democratic obscenities back to the illiberal, and we forcefully reject them.
