Supporting Carini's appeal, he emphasizes, are "the vast majority" of the approximately 150 witnesses who have left the protection program.
"For Denise's funeral, we will find flags flown at half-mast, banners, funeral wreaths, tricolor sashes on the chests of mayors, the contrite faces of some parliamentarians, and all the official banners of a state that doesn't think about the living, about how to help them on their journey in and out of the protection program," the letter continues. "The conscience of honest people questions what could have been done but wasn't, how long we were able to stay by her side, why we didn't understand her suffering, her isolation, while on the other side they pretend nothing is happening.
Let's be clear: witnesses for justice are considered a burden, ungrateful, a plant to be uprooted and removed from the protection program."
"As I write, there are witnesses of justice who are suffering, asking for help, living in poverty because they have been waiting for almost nineteen years for a regulation on pension contributions, and since 2008 for the 'comprehensive implementing regulation' of Law No. 6 of January 11, 2018," Carini emphasizes. "Let us not allow the veil of oblivion of the state and political parties to fall on living witnesses of justice. To politicians, I say: care for the living, their needs, their suffering, and the duties you have toward them. It has been said that witnesses of justice are courageous people, that Lea and Denise were courageous women and as such will never die, but we do not want gravestones or epitaphs carved in marble," Carini concludes in the letter. "Witnesses of justice have the sacrosanct right to live and to live a normal life."
