Chiara Nava Forensic criminologist Anna Vagli , 37, originally from Forte dei Marmi, has been indicted on charges of aggravated defamation against Alberto Stasi , as reported by Fanpage. The decision was made by Lucca Court Judge Nidia Genovese at the end of the pre-trial hearing, after the parties failed to reach an agreement.
Fanpage, the editor and deputy editor of the online publication, have also been named as civilly liable in the proceedings, in relation to the alleged failure to review the article contested by Stasi. Chiara Poggi's ex-boyfriend has filed a civil suit and is represented by the lawyer Giada Bocellari, who filed the complaint against the criminologist. Vagli is represented by the lawyer Filippo Tacchi.
The article on the Garlasco crime and the protests
The case stems from an article published in May 2022 on Fanpage about the murder of Chiara Poggi . The piece, written by Anna Vagli , argued that Alberto Stasi was responsible for the crime, with a particularly clear headline: " Why Alberto Stasi is Chiara Poggi's murderer beyond any reasonable doubt ."
The article also raised the possibility that Chiara Poggi had discovered child pornography stored on her then-boyfriend's computer, and that this could have been the motive for the murder. It is precisely this passage that is contested in the complaint. Specifically, Vagli allegedly wrote that Stasi's computer contained a folder called "Military," which allegedly contained child pornography.
Stasi's defense disputed this reconstruction , emphasizing that the presence of that material and its possible connection to the murder have not been judicially established as a motive for the crime. Alberto Stasi was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of Chiara Poggi, killed on August 13, 2007. The conviction became final after the second appeal trial and the subsequent ruling by the Court of Cassation. Stasi is currently serving his sentence on probation.
The indictment and the upcoming trial
A central issue in the case concerns the question of child pornography. In the murder proceedings, Stasi was not definitively convicted of possession of child pornography . The Court of Cassation had in fact overturned the conviction without remand, deeming the matter to be unfounded. Among the elements highlighted was the lack of sufficient evidence to establish how certain file fragments had arrived on the computer , whether they had actually been viewed by Stasi, and whether it was possible to deduce their content from the file names.
The case concerning the alleged defamation was initially brought before the Court of Milan, but was later transferred to Lucca for territorial jurisdiction, given the criminologist's residence. Before the hearing, an attempt to reach a settlement was initiated to resolve the dispute without going to trial, but the parties were unable to reach an agreement. Judge Genovese therefore ordered the case to be sent to trial. Anna Vagli is scheduled to appear before Judge Antonella Frizilio on November 6th . It will be there that the criminal proceedings regarding the allegations contained in the article, contested by Alberto Stasi, will begin.
