Guerrilla warfare and devastation in Milan, Meloni: condemn unambiguously

Milan, October 18 (askanews) – Broken shop windows, torched trash cans, devastation: this is the scene after an afternoon of violence and clashes in Milan, in Piazza Duomo and the surrounding streets. Demonstrations against the high cost of living and fuel, organized by the "Italia in Piazza" movement, also spread to other cities such as Bologna and Turin, resulting in particularly violent scenes in the Lombardy capital, when groups of young people, many dressed in black and with their faces covered, threw firecrackers, rocks, barriers, and bottles at police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons.

At least forty protesters were arrested, and several officers and protesters were injured. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni harshly condemned the incident on social media: "Demonstrating is a right. Burning down our cities is not," she wrote. Addressing the opposition, she added: "Don't be ambiguous about this. Unambiguously condemn this violence and make a clear appeal for every demonstration to be peaceful.

Faced with scenes like this, the refusal must be unanimous."
