New floods have hit Nepal after the Budhi Gandaki River burst its banks in the central Gorkha district. The floods swept away dozens of homes and several suspension bridges, damaging part of a hydroelectric power plant. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRM) reported the situation, adding that 50 people were rescued along the riverbanks, but five remain missing.
Within a couple of hours, the river's water level at one spot rose from two meters to nearly 8,5 meters, officials said.
Nepal is on high alert and is still trying to recover from the catastrophic floods that hit its border towns with Tibet two months ago, leaving more than 1.400 dead and thousands missing.
The causes of the latest flood are still unclear. Some speculate that a landslide may have temporarily blocked the river or one of its tributaries, causing the accumulated water to spill out, while others claim that residents upstream witnessed an ice avalanche.
