Newsweek celebrates private and public healthcare in Lombardy

Rome, October 6 (askanews) – From cardiology to oncology to neuroscience, Italian healthcare is gaining a place among the world's leading healthcare providers. Forty-two Italian facilities are listed in Newsweek's 2027 World's Best Specialized Hospitals ranking. Lombardy leads the Italian rankings, with 15 selected hospitals. In Milan, the Carlo Besta Hospital ranks eighth globally in Neurology and eleventh in Neurosurgery.

The European Institute of Oncology ranks fourteenth in Oncology, and the Monzino Cardiology Center ranks seventeenth in Cardiology. In the same specialty, San Raffaele Hospital ranks twenty-second, while Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio Hospital is among the top fifty worldwide in Orthopedics. These results are achieved by accredited public and private facilities: seven of the fifteen Lombardy facilities cited are private. This result demonstrates how strongly the Lombardy Region has invested in recent decades not only in the provision of healthcare services, but in the entire life sciences sector.

And how much it has wanted to emphasize aspects of service delivery, production, service quality, and applied research, thanks to collaborations within accredited public and private healthcare facilities,” explains Michele Nicchio, president of Aiop Lombardia. This figure recognizes the management of healthcare in Lombardy carried out in recent years by Councilor Guido Bertolaso and brings attention to the Lombardy model: accredited public and private hospitals operating within the same Regional Health Service.

A collaboration that the Lombardy Region has nurtured over the years through common rules and institutional autonomy. "For more than twenty years," Nicchio recalls, "the Region has concretely decided to implement true and full subsidiarity between the public and private sectors. This has been reflected in the numbers now represented by accredited private healthcare: 50% of the entire Lombardy Region's outpatient specialist care, 40% of hospitalizations; out of 19 IRCCS (scientific hospitalization and treatment institutes), 14 are accredited private healthcare providers. These aren't just numbers, however; they also demonstrate the quality we are internationally recognized for, as evidenced by Newsweek's ranking of the world's best hospitals. This quality obviously benefits our fellow citizens." Maintaining high quality care, however, means addressing the challenges facing the Italian healthcare system: reducing waiting lists, ensuring adequate resources, and responding to a changing demand for care. "The public and accredited private healthcare systems are therefore two components of the regional healthcare system and must face the same challenges side by side. Two in particular: the single regional CUP and the reduction of waiting lists. These are two challenges in which the accredited private sector has already demonstrated its contribution. Given this, after more than 15 years, we believe it is essential to update the rates for inpatient and outpatient services. This will allow us to provide the same financial recognition and dignity to workers in the accredited private sector as workers in the public sector,” concludes Nicchio.
