The five areas of reform proposed by Klaveness
Klaveness identified five critical areas for FIFA reform. First, the independent selection of committee members, who are currently appointed by the president. Second, reducing the number of Council members to a third or at least half, to improve efficiency.
Third, the establishment of clear rules between the administration and the president, with a more non-executive role for the latter.
Fourth, the need to move away from the strategy of continued growth in commercial revenues, focusing instead on governing the laws of the game, transfers, and tournaments. Finally, the review and implementation of the reforms on which Infantino was elected in 2015.
FIFA's leadership and Čeferin's role
Klaveness expressed gratitude for the role of UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin in thwarting the plan to sell the tournament. Without his intervention and that of Kevin Lamour, former FIFA Chief Operating Officer, the project might have succeeded. Klaveness emphasized the importance of leadership that puts compromise and sport above personal interests.
He also spoke about the importance of maintaining an arm's-length distance from political leaders, citing concerns that predate the Trump administration. Infantino's closeness to political leaders has led to complicated situations and potential conflicts of interest.
The Future of FIFA and the Role of Klaveness
Klaveness expressed solidarity with FIFA staff, who have worked hard despite the controversy. He emphasized that FIFA also does many positive things, such as hosting the World Cup, and that it is important to recognize their work.
