New perspectives in the treatment of locally advanced and inoperable pancreatic cancer. The world's first surgery using an innovative radioactive biological glue (YntraDose*) developed by the Italian biotech company BetaGlue Therapeutics, a subsidiary of the Fondazione Tech e Biomedical, was performed at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
The procedure, performed by Roberto Iezzi, director of interventional radiology at the Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli, as part of an international trial—the principal investigator of which is Giampaolo Tortora, director of the Complex Operating Unit (UOC) of Medical Oncology—referred to a 63-year-old woman with locally advanced, inoperable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
The aim was to create the conditions for subsequent operability.
"Seeing BetaGlue technology reach its first clinical application worldwide represents a pivotal moment and confirmation of the project's concrete value," said Cinzia Marchese, president of the Tech and Biomedical Foundation. "This," she added, "is the role we want to play: helping create the conditions for a technology born in Italy to move from the concept to the clinical trial, all the way to the patient's bedside."
The BetaGlue case demonstrates the strategic importance of building an ecosystem capable of supporting biomedical research throughout this process." The trial, which involves centers in Italy, Belgium, and the UK, is continuing to enroll patients. The next treatments are scheduled for October.
