Asuncion, November 6 (askanews) – Thousands of people are protesting in Paraguay against a banking scandal that has left nearly half the population without access to their savings, prompting the resignation of President Santiago Pena. Pena, who is close to US President Donald Trump, resigned after the opposition called an extraordinary session to begin impeachment proceedings in Congress and following protesters' calls for his resignation following accusations against the Paraguayan president regarding possible misuse of pension funds and an institutional cover-up related to the collapse of Ueno Bank.
Congress suspended the president's resignation pending the outcome of the impeachment proceedings, leaving him temporarily in office. "I believe Santiago Pena's resignation should never be accepted," said one protester. "The impeachment proceedings must continue because a thief like him cannot go unpunished."
