Rome, October 21 (askanews) – "Ultra-processed foods must be banned, starting from schools, hospitals, and public canteens." This is the appeal launched by Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, president of the UniVerde Foundation, at the International Forum on Agriculture and Food organized in Rome by Coldiretti. "It is paradoxical that in ten years the number of young people with diabetes has doubled and that citizens' health is deteriorating, also due to the consumption of excessively harmful products," says Pecoraro Scanio, calling for action from the Italian government, the European Union, and all relevant institutions. "Italy, home of the Mediterranean diet and a fruit and vegetable tradition among the best in the world, must be an international benchmark for improving the quality of our diet.
"The recognition of Italian cuisine as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO reinforces this responsibility," he emphasizes. Pecoraro Scanio also expresses appreciation for Coldiretti's initiative to launch a class action lawsuit against multinational food producers. "We must intervene decisively and guide the industry toward sustainable, healthy, and high-quality foods that respect the health of citizens and guarantee farmers a fair income," he concludes.
