"I don't know how a position like this can be reconciled with the party's policy." Romano Prodi, former Prime Minister and former President of the European Commission, commented on the remarks made by Virginia Libero, secretary of the Young Democrats, in Reggio Emilia, specifically the phrase: "We will not be soldiers in your wars. For us, speaking of homeland means repudiating war. We will organize deserters."
Libero spoke last Sunday at the closing of the Festa dell'Unità in Reggio Emilia. The youth leader's remarks sparked a heated debate within the party, which was divided between those who appreciated the speech and those who criticized its approach. Prodi also appears to fall into the latter camp, judging by his comments on the Radio24 program "Images, a Look at Current Affairs" with Valentina Furlanetto and Riccardo Barlaam.
"When I heard it," Prodi says, "I said 'let's hope it grows,' because if anyone has always fought for peace, it's me. But here we are faced with a very clear choice, a policy forced by a series of circumstances that have triggered an incredible war.
I don't know how a position like this can be reconciled with party policy. I believe this statement is outside the scope of the Democratic Party's plan. So, it's a proposal that isn't from the Democratic Party and has never even been discussed within the Democratic Party, as far as I know, so let's take it as a mistake, as Topo Gigio would say,” Prodi concludes.
