(Adnkronos) – “I believe it's very important today for citizens to have accurate healthcare information because it's a fundamental tool for ensuring proper access to care, as access to care is often denied precisely because people lack adequate knowledge. And Naples, which is such a complex city, even socially, with so many marginalized communities, teaches us how often it's essential that information becomes a tool for access, especially for the most vulnerable.”

This was the statement made by Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, speaking today at the Cardarelli Hospital at the second edition of the Health Journalism Forum, regarding the importance of starting a debate on healthcare and accurate health information in Naples.

In this sense, the role of municipalities is also fundamental in ensuring equity in the services offered to citizens.

"This is the challenge we face at a time when inequalities and social hardships are so great," Manfredi explained. "The commitment of municipalities, which often don't even have the means to do so, is to promote greater equity in access, and today I believe this is the real challenge when we see that a significant portion of the population doesn't have access to care and we realize that they are often the oldest, the poorest, the most marginalized.

This truly makes us reflect on the issue of health democracy today, and the commitment of local governments, which are local governments, is essential."

"I believe that public healthcare is one of the most important assets we have inherited, it is one of the pillars of our Republic," the mayor concluded. "Public healthcare and public schools are values we perhaps don't appreciate because we have them, but defending this extraordinary heritage, in a time of change, of economic hardship, of changing social composition, I believe is the real battle of the moment."
