Weather alerts in Sardinia and Sicily: the latest updates

The severe weather emergency is spreading to eastern Sardinia, where the red weather alert for hydrogeological risk has prompted numerous municipal administrations to adopt preventive measures ahead of Thursday, November 5, 2026. Forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms , with possible particularly high accumulations, have led to the suspension of classes and the closure of several public places.

Among the affected towns are Olbia, Nuoro, Budoni, Castiadas, Muravera and Lanusei , as well as other municipalities in the area.

The measures don't just affect schools: in several locations , parks, cemeteries, libraries, gyms, and sports facilities have also been closed . The aim is to reduce the number of people in areas potentially exposed to flooding, inundations, and other phenomena linked to worsening weather conditions.

The administrations therefore invite residents to limit their movements and to follow the official communications from the Civil Protection.

In Olbia , Mayor Settimo Nizzi has signed four ordinances ordering the closure of schools , daycare centers, educational services for children aged 0-3, and community centers. The suspension also affects municipal offices open to the public, with the exception of essential services. Access to cemeteries, the Fausto Noce urban park, and associated sports facilities, including the Tennis Club, the Bowling Club, and the Deiana Sports Hall, has also been suspended. The mayor emphasized the need to adopt "all necessary measures to ensure public safety," urging residents to avoid non-essential travel.

In Nuoro , Mayor Emiliano Fenu has ordered the suspension of teaching activities in all schools, both public and private, including universities. The ordinance also includes nursery schools, playrooms, the municipal library, museums, parks, gyms, outdoor sports facilities, and the cemetery. Similar measures have been adopted in other towns in the province and in eastern Sardinia.

In Bitti , Mayor Giuseppe Ciccolini signed an ordinance that, in addition to closing all schools, imposes a series of traffic restrictions. Parking restrictions have been implemented on several streets and squares, including Via Cavallotti, Via Gramsci, Via Brigata Sassari, Via Brescia, Piazza Giovanni Falcone, Via Karol Wojtyla, Via Salvemini, and Piazza Doneddu. Several roads and connecting roads will also be closed, as well as the crossings over the Rio Mannu in the towns of Guore, Pischina, and S'Eliche e Prunedda. Access to the Romanzesu archaeological site has also been closed.

In Budoni , the mayor has ordered the closure of all schools, including nursery schools, parks, sports facilities, and cemeteries for Thursday, November 5th. However, the reception of bodies and mortuary police services will remain operational for the latter. The administration recommends particular caution along roads near the coast and also urges commuters to limit their travel.

The administrations of Castiadas and Muravera have adopted similar measures through ordinances issued by Mayors Eugenio Murgioni and Francesca Mattana. In addition to schools, libraries, gyms, sports facilities, cemeteries, public parks, playgrounds, and recreational areas will remain closed. This decision is based on the forecast of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms, some of which are intense and persistent, with locally very heavy rainfall.

Schools have also been ordered to close on Thursday in Golfo Aranci, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Orosei, Posada, Siniscola, Torpè, Lanusei, and Galtellì. In Golfo Aranci, Mayor Giuseppe Fasolino signed Ordinance No. 32, which extends the closure to sports facilities, public parks, and the municipal cemetery.
