Sinner, who will be the new coach? Norman and Ferrero are in the running, but Cahill may reconsider.

(Adnkronos) – Who will be alongside Simone Vagnozzi as Jannik Sinner's supercoach in 2027? This is the question the world number one will have to answer in the coming weeks. Darren Cahill is expected to say goodbye, his family is calling, and after more than four decades traveling the world, first as a player and then as a coach, it seems the time has come to put tennis on the back burner and stay home.

However, the farewell is not a given and the surprise is possible.

The Australian coach has already changed his mind once, and a second reconsideration is possible. The bond with Sinner is strong, and their results together are significant. In July, after Sinner's second consecutive Wimbledon triumph, the 61-year-old Queenslander had in fact explained that he would stay until the end of 2026 and that only then would he discuss with the Italian the best solution for the future.

If he were to reconsider, Sinner would be happy to continue working with him, but if he were to leave, two hottest options are on the table. The name that has gained traction most quickly is Magnus Norman. The Swede was the architect of Stan Wawrinka's meteoric rise to the top, leading him to three Grand Slam titles and the world No. 3 ranking in the 'Big Three' era.

The idea didn't arise out of nowhere: Norman had already been considered by Sinner a few years ago, before settling on the Vagnozzi-Cahill pairing. Then there's Juan Carlos Ferrero. And he's probably the most intriguing name. The Spaniard has concluded his long career with Carlos Alcaraz and plans to return to the tour in 2027. He hasn't yet announced a new player, and he hasn't closed the door even on the most widely rumored possibility: working with Sinner himself. Ferrero knows Alcaraz's world from the inside, and the prospect of finding him on the other side of the net would inevitably make the choice sensational.

Sinner will make the final decision. The long layoff could become an opportunity to calmly consider the next phase of his career. The Pustertal native will need to recover physically, but also plan his return without hasty changes to a group that has produced extraordinary results in recent years and where Vagnozzi remains the cornerstone of the technical project. The feeling is that the answer won't necessarily come anytime soon. First, it will be necessary to understand how Sinner will approach the recovery phase and what his approach to the new season will be. Then, the time for decisions will come. Sinner has already demonstrated his ability to reach the top. Now he must decide with whom he can try to stay there as long as possible.
