Sri Lanka, after the record number of tourists, the challenge for 2027 begins.

Milan, October 23 (askanews) – After reaching a record high of over 2,36 million tourists in 2025, Sri Lanka aims to strengthen its presence in European markets, with a particular focus on Italy. The crisis in the Middle East has complicated air travel to Europe, but the tourism sector is gradually recovering, according to a report by DMSA to Askanews.

Niroshana, Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, met in Milan. India is the main source market for visitors, while five European countries are among the top fifteen: the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Italy. To attract new Italian travelers, the tourism board has planned a six- to eight-month digital and public relations campaign for 2027, as part of a broader international promotion strategy. Sri Lanka is focusing above all on the diversity of its territory.

In a single vacation, you can alternate the beaches of the Indian Ocean with the mountains and tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya, and even natural parks populated by elephants and leopards. Niroshana describes this offering through comparisons with some of the world's most famous destinations, from the Maldives to Switzerland, and even African safaris.
