The news of the tragedy has caused deep shock in the diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina, historically linked to the Congregation founded a hundred years ago by Blessed Maria Crocifissa Curcio, and in the community of Castellammare di Stabia, Sister Nerina's hometown.
Civil and religious authorities expressed their condolences for the loss of the nuns and their closeness to the Congregation, underlining the educational and missionary contribution of the Carmelites for the neediest children and young people. The bishop of Noto and the mayor of the city of Stabia offered prayers and messages of support to the injured nun, wishing her a speedy recovery.
It is with deep sadness that I learned of the tragic passing in Tanzania of Sister Maria Nerina De Simone, counselor and general secretary of the Carmelite Missionaries of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, originally from our Castellammare di Stabia. Sister Maria Nerina lost her life along with three other sisters and their driver while they were on their way to the airport to return to Italy after their mission in Africa.
