The news of the tragedy has caused deep shock in the diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina, historically linked to the Congregation founded a hundred years ago by Blessed Maria Crocifissa Curcio, and in the community of Castellammare di Stabia, Sister Nerina's hometown.

Sister Maria Nerina lost her life along with three other sisters and their driver while they were on their way to the airport to return to Italy after their mission in Africa.
