Washington, Oct. 9 (askanews) – Donald Trump defends the death sentence against Nidal Hasan, the former U.S. Army major who killed 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009. The president calls him a "crazy" and maintains that he deserves to be executed by firing squad, scheduled for December 3. Meanwhile, controversy is growing over the Pentagon's decision to livestream the execution.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that the broadcast would violate the absolute ban on torture. Criticism also came from Republican and Democratic representatives. Republican Senator Thom Tillis, while in favor of the execution, called the livestream "beyond the limits of disgusting," comparing public executions to those practiced in Iran and Afghanistan.
If carried out, it will be the first American military execution since 1945. "Today, you can do practically anything and nothing happens," Trump says. "But we are changing things, you see. In fact, we are sentencing to death a man who killed 14 soldiers a couple of years ago. Death penalty by firing squad, and he deserves it.
He killed and injured many people. A madman."
