United Nations (New York), September 24 (askanews) – Italy will continue to support Kiev "for as long as necessary," but will work for a just peace and so that, ultimately, Russia can return to being "an interlocutor and not a threat to Europe." In his address to the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reiterated his condemnation of Russian aggression and called the ceasefire "the first step toward European security that protects everyone, including Russia."
Tajani also expressed concern about Russia's growing hybrid threats against Europe, adding that "peace requires openness, but also firmness." Italy stands for rules, dialogue, and politics. This is why we have condemned and continue to condemn Russia's aggression against Ukraine. We will continue to support Kiev for as long as necessary, but we are working for a just solution and so that Russia can ultimately return to being an interlocutor and not a threat to Europe. Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council, cannot, however, shirk its responsibilities.
The ceasefire is not a concession to the other side, but the first step toward European security that protects everyone, including Russia. This is why we view with great concern the growing Russian hybrid threats against Europe, and why we have expressed our full solidarity with Germany for the attack on Leipzig airport. Peace requires openness, but also firmness.
Dialogue without truth is weakness. Firmness without dialogue is a dead end.
