The 91-year-old died after three weeks of hospitalization: his caregiver "operated" on him with a kitchen knife at home. The investigation is ongoing.

Antonio Reggio, the 91-year-old man from Vibo Valentia, died after three weeks of hospitalization . A caregiver "operates" on a 91-year-old woman in her home: knives, gloves, and saline solution seized.

According to investigations reported by Tgcom24 , that night the caregiver allegedly made Reggio lie down on the bed and administered sedatives . After putting him to sleep, she then used a household knife to attempt what she believed to be a necessary operation to rid him of the suspected parasite.

The woman, of Ukrainian nationality, apparently was not the elderly man's regular carer , but was temporarily replacing a compatriot.

He had started working at the house towards the end of June 2026 and the relationship was due to end on August 20 , the day after the events.

During the search of the house, the officers seized several knives, latex gloves and bottles of saline solution , material that according to investigators could be linked to the preparation of the rudimentary home "operating room".

The version provided by the woman remains under investigation by investigators.

Vibo Valentia: A caregiver "operates" on a 91-year-old man at home with a knife; he dies after days of agony.

Antonio Reggio , the 91-year-old man who was seriously injured in his home in Vibo Valentia on the night between August 18th and 19th, has died . According to investigators' reconstruction, as reported by Tgcom24 , the elderly man was sedated and subjected to a sort of domestic intervention by his caregiver, who used a kitchen knife to make a deep cut in his abdomen. The woman apparently acted under the belief that Reggio had " an animal in his belly " and that it was necessary to intervene to extract it.

When police arrived at the apartment, the 91-year-old was unconscious and had several blood-soaked bandages on his abdomen . He was rescued and initially taken to the hospital in Vibo Valentia with critical condition, but was later transferred to Catanzaro, where he died approximately three weeks later.

Doctors found, among other injuries, massive thoracic hemorrhage, a stab wound in the hypogastric region, and multiple compound fractures. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death and any connection to the injuries sustained. Given the elderly man's death, the woman's charges should be upgraded from attempted aggravated murder to murder.
