(Adnkronos) – The countdown ended today, Thursday, October 29, 2026. Alexander Zverev is the new world number one in tennis. Thanks to his victory over Tallon Griekspoor (6-4, 7-5) in the round of 16 of the ATP 500 in Vienna, the German surpassed Italian Jannik Sinner and will officially top the ATP rankings starting Monday, November 2.
Until today, Sinner led the standings with 9.450 points, with Zverev trailing at 9.400.
By defeating the Dutchman, the German earned the 50 points that allow him to catch up with the Italian and complete the overtaking. But how can Zverev find himself ahead of Sinner with the same score? The answer lies in the tie-breaking criteria.
In the event of a tie, the first parameter to consider concerns the points earned between ATP Finals, Grand Slam tournaments and mandatory Masters 1000 tournaments.
And here the German holds the advantage with 8.360 points to the Italian's 8.350. Ten points, but enough to make the difference.
