This prompted the National Council to develop the "Practical Guide to Artificial Intelligence for Engineers: Rules, Ethics, and Best Professional Practices," presented today at the National Congress of Engineers, underway in Trieste. "We have seen," explained Carla Cappiello, Deputy Vice President of the National Council of Engineers, "the daily use of generative AI, sensitive or privacy-protected data uploaded to even free platforms, and we have seen the secretariats of professional associations asking if they can use generative AI.
To answer these questions, we realized that a circular wasn't enough; we needed to explain whether we were capable of managing AI. The Guide, of course, is constantly updated.
Attorney Federico Lucarelli highlighted the civil, professional, disciplinary, and criminal liability that engineers face when using Artificial Intelligence in their work.
"The professional," he recalled, "is required to verify the reliability of the results produced, correct any errors, and exercise his or her own independent technical judgment before using such content within the scope of the assignment received. If the use of AI causes damage to the client or third parties, the Engineer may be held liable in civil court when the damage is attributable to negligence, imprudence, incompetence, or failure to verify the output generated by the system."
