"We're a Little Better," Luchetti: Family and Adoptions Far from Cliché

Rome, October 18 (askanews) – Daniele Luchetti's new film, "Us, a Little Better," was presented at the Rome Film Fest in the Grand Public section and is available on Netflix from October 29. Complicated relationships that can work; difficult motherhood, compromises to be found if there's love. A non-judgmental look at others, with humanity and wonder, seeking to put aside clichés.

Daniele Luchetti said: "This story tells how you can accept the fact that you don't fit into pre-established models for starting a family, for having children, and how this constant adaptation, which seems like a distressing experience for a couple, is actually the couple itself." "A film you can identify with, thinking it's exactly like that, but in reality we're using an affectionate gaze on the world that makes it real, but a little more beautiful than reality," added the director. The protagonists are Simone and Lucia, Elio Germano, and Maria Chiara Giannetta.

He's a firefighter with a strong sense of family; she's a nurse, independent, and opposed to motherhood. Their love is strong despite their differences, but falters when they decide to adopt a child and face judgments and challenges. Elio Germano: "What I did was hang out at the fire station and understand their values, including humanity. It's not a performative or macho body, it's a body that deals with emotion."

Maria Chiara Giannetta on her character: "Coming from a non-family, from a model of motherhood that's absent for her, she thinks she can't be a mother. However, through the relationship that develops, through the couple where compromises are made, or at least attempted, there's an attempt to seek her motherhood beyond sterility." It's about motherhood and adoption, but with hope. A film that also seeks to transcend some clichés: "Talent and empathy, people's hearts are scattered haphazardly everywhere, so this is also a choice to portray institutions in this desirable way."
