Jannik Sinner is ending his 2026 season early. The world number one has decided to take a break to treat a problem with his right knee and continue with the conservative treatment recommended by doctors. After his triumph at Wimbledon, the Italian will therefore miss the final events of the year, including the ATP Finals in Turin, with the goal of a full recovery and return to the court in 2027.
Jannik Sinner stops: the knee problem and the choice of treatment
Jannik Sinner 's season was interrupted after his success at Wimbledon on July 12, 2026 , when the world number one defeated Alexander Zverev in four sets to win his fifth Grand Slam title. Since then, however, a problem with his right knee has progressively affected the South Tyrolean's schedule.
After missing the American tour and the US Open, Sinner continued his recovery under the supervision of his staff and underwent several medical checks, including at J Medical in Turin. As reported by Sky Sport , the inflammation was described as extra-articular tendinopathy , and according to available updates, the condition did not require surgery.
The path identified instead is the conservative one, with therapies and necessary rest to allow the knee to fully recover.
The decision came after attempts to plan a return to the tour were gradually postponed. Sinner was supposed to return first to Beijing and then to the Shanghai Masters 1000 , but on October 3, he announced he would also withdraw from the Chinese tournament. "Unfortunately, I won't be able to play the tournament, as I had hoped ," he wrote on social media.
Jannik Sinner's future depends on caution: no Finals, goal 2027
With this latest decision, Sinner also misses the final part of the season, including the ATP Finals in Turin , where he was supposed to defend the title he won in 2025. The break also represents a significant sacrifice from a ranking point of view: the Italian risks losing the advantage he has built up over Alexander Zverev , who can take advantage of his rival's absence to get closer to the top of the rankings.
The priority, however, is to avoid turning a manageable problem into a more prolonged injury. The specialists consulted in Lyon recommended continuing conservative treatment , confirming the approach already followed by the staff. Sinner has therefore chosen to look beyond the standings and immediate fixtures, putting his own career first: " At the moment I also have to think about my long-term career . " In his message to the fans, he added: " I will do everything possible to get back to 100% . " The goal thus becomes to use the next few months to complete the recovery, gradually resume training and present himself in 2027 in top physical condition , without rushing a return that could compromise the work done.
