(Adnkronos) – Starting today, Airbnb will donate a portion of its revenue from every stay to Airbnb.org, which provides free temporary accommodations to people experiencing a crisis. Airbnb announced the news in a statement, explaining that the new funding model will contribute $500 million to Airbnb.org over the next five years, enabling the nonprofit to offer 1 million free nights annually.
This funding will also allow Airbnb.org to expand its commitment to supporting families traveling for medical care, victims of domestic violence and exploitation, and more.
The idea for Airbnb.org was born in 2012, when a host opened the doors of her home to people displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
Other hosts followed suit, and in 2020, this initiative inspired Airbnb to found Airbnb.org, an independent nonprofit organization. Since then, Airbnb.org has provided free accommodations for over 1,6 million nights to more than 250 people worldwide.
“Fourteen years ago, after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, a host opened the doors of her home to people who had nowhere else to go.
A simple act of generosity, which evolved into Airbnb.org. Since then, we've helped provide over 1,6 million free nights of accommodation to people in crisis. Today, every time someone books a place on Airbnb, they help someone else find a place to stay when they need it most. It's Airbnb at its best,” said Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb.
Airbnb's $500 million in funding and additional donations will help Airbnb.org expand its work: by the end of 2026, it will support families traveling for medical care in over 20 countries; a new program will provide free temporary housing to those fleeing danger and trying to rebuild their lives; and Airbnb.org is expanding its support for veterans with serious illnesses or undergoing intensive care, in partnership with Fisher House Foundation, Dream Foundation, and Operation Healing Forces.
The new funding model will not increase the amount paid by guests, nor will it reduce host compensation. Airbnb will donate $0,10 of its revenue to Airbnb.org for each stay. Donations will not be made for stays canceled before check-in, nor for experience or service bookings. Guests and hosts are not required to participate in any program or take any action. Guests supported by Airbnb.org stay for free, while hosts receive compensation for their stay. Hosts can also voluntarily choose to support Airbnb.org by offering discounted stays or donating a portion of their earnings.
To ensure that 100% of public donations go directly to provide free accommodations, Airbnb covers the operating costs of Airbnb.org, without earning any revenue from these stays.
