Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – Turning cans that would otherwise end up in the trash into money. This is the idea that came to Ryan, a 13-year-old English boy who a few years ago founded "We Can CIC" (Community Interest Company), an initiative that aims to collect 20 cans a week to be turned into pounds sterling to donate to charity.
The teenager's story, launched by the BBC in recent months, is still making the rounds around the world today.
How does it work? People collect the cans, which are then collected by Ryan's family, crushed in their garage in Solihull, and sold to scrap metal recycling centers. The proceeds, after deducting expenses, are donated to food banks and other charities.
Every year, around £5,000 in cash and food is donated to charities such as Anawim, a women's shelter in Birmingham.
The family also said they could help alleviate recycling problems in Birmingham, where waste collection had been halted for over a year due to the garbage workers' strike.
“We are happy to grow the charity initiative.
It's all for the good. We'll be happy to come and collect the aluminum cans and make sure they can be of greater help to people in need," Ryan's father, who has become a real star in the West Midlands, told the British broadcaster.
The boy confided: "I'd rather play video games with my friends, since I'm 13. But if I think about it, I love what I do because I can help people in need, families, and give back to the community. I want to help others in my free time; I thought about it for a while and finally came up with the idea of the cans."
