Milan, October 19 (askanews) – "Maranza and social centers, exemplary punishment for these criminals": this is the red and white writing on a huge black banner leading the demonstration called by the center-right in Piazza San Carlo in Milan following the devastation and looting that occurred in the city center over the weekend. The initiative was organized to express solidarity with the residents, the business owners who suffered damage, and the law enforcement officers injured in the clashes.
Another white banner bore the phrase "We will all remigrate." Around a hundred people attended, including Senate President Ignazio La Russa, as well as two of the coalition's three aspiring mayoral candidates: Northern League MEP Silvia Sardone and Forza Italia MP Matteo Perego. There were some tense moments when some youths protested, set off firecrackers, and hurled insults at La Russa, who was leaving the square at the time.
Riot police formed a cordon around the protest.
