Ecuador: Six hectares of forest on fire in Quito, homes threatened

Quito, September 17 (askanews) – A massive fire has engulfed Ecuador, devastating at least six hectares of forest in Quito. The blaze broke out in a wooded area surrounded by homes between La Vicentina and Itchimbía, a busy area near a gas station that was also affected by a fire last weekend.

Numerous people have been displaced. Authorities have not yet reported any deaths or damage to infrastructure, although at least 14 people have been treated for respiratory problems. Arson has not been ruled out. The summer was particularly intense and scorching in the country: the very hot climate and dry vegetation favored the rapid spread of the flames.

Between June and September, around 200 fires were recorded, destroying approximately 1.200 hectares of forest in Quito.
