Fuel, Eni raises pump prices: what's happening?

Diesel prices are rising again after the excise tax discount ended. Eni raises the diesel price cap to €2,25 per liter.

Diesel prices will rise again starting today, Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The tax discount of 6,1 cents per liter expired at midnight, and the mobile excise tax mechanism has not yet come into effect. Eni has therefore adjusted its diesel price cap from €2,19 to €2,25 per liter. Gasoline will remain at €1,99.

The first effects are already visible in the average fuel prices recorded by Mimit.

Fuel prices rise, diesel discount ends

The deadline was set for midnight between October 5th and 6th. The reduction in diesel excise duty, amounting to 6,1 cents per liter, ended that moment. However, the new mobile excise duty mechanism announced by the government has not been implemented.

The interministerial decree between Mase and Mef, required to utilize the VAT relief and reduce excise duties, has not been published in the Official Journal. ANSA reports this, reconstructing the transition to ordinary diesel taxation . This is the first time since March that no tax relief on fuel has been in effect.

Change comes directly to the pump.

On September 28, Eni introduced a price cap on diesel fuel set at €2,19 per liter. This cap, however, was tied to the excise tax relief.

With the end of the discount, the limit has been updated.

Eni diesel will therefore rise to 2,25 euros per liter, while the cap for gasoline remains at 1,99 euros. The company clarified that the price cap remains in place, but will not absorb the tax reinstatement.

Diesel prices rise: fuel prices at the pump

The increase hasn't yet translated into a similar increase across the entire network. Are fuel prices rising ? MIMIT data, collected by the Fuel Price Observatory, currently indicates an average self-service price of €2,043 per liter for gasoline and €2,244 for diesel on the national road network.

Yesterday, diesel was priced at €2,242. That's up two thousandths. On the motorway network, the average self-service price is €2,267 per liter, compared to €2,266 in the previous survey.

The numbers are still modest, then. But the change in direction is being closely monitored.

Codacons reports the first increases since the end of the discount and emphasizes the interruption of the reductions seen in previous days. The National Consumers Union also criticizes the failure to implement the mobile excise tax. Massimiliano Dona, president of the association, emphasizes that for now the increase is limited: about 5 cents for a 50-liter tank on the highway and 10 cents on the ordinary network, based on Mimit averages.

Meanwhile, the situation remains unclear. The discount has ended, the new tax mechanism hasn't yet kicked in, and companies continue to implement their own price adjustments.

For those who need to refuel, however, the difference is already tangible: diesel costs more than it did yesterday.
