Linda Martinucci, a 46-year-old woman, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run van while cycling on the old Torre Matilde overpass, near a gas station. The accident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m., and the driver of the vehicle fled the scene without providing assistance.
The accident and the rescue
The alarm was raised at 2:57 a.m., and emergency services arrived on the scene at 3:02 a.m. The victim, Linda Martinucci, born in 1980, was found in critical condition. Paramedics from the Croce Verde and the emergency medical service attempted to stabilize her, but during the transport to the hospital, she went into cardiac arrest and died despite continued attempts to resuscitate her.
The role of the boyfriend and the passing driver
The victim's boyfriend, who was not injured in the fatal collision, was also present at the scene of the accident. He and the driver of a passing car provided first aid and alerted 112. The two also had the presence of mind to write down the license plate of the hit-and-run van, despite the turbulent nature of the situation.
The driver's escape and the investigations
The driver of the van, a non-EU citizen, was stopped a short distance from the scene of the accident. Along with him, the other occupants of the van, also from his country, were taken to the police station for questioning. Their positions are being examined by investigators. Breathalyzer tests have been ordered for all those involved.
Carabinieri patrols were able to quickly locate and reach the van's owner and the alleged fugitives thanks to the license plate. Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the accident's details. According to an initial reconstruction, the van performed an overtaking maneuver and struck the victim.
