(Adnkronos) – The finish line is closer. And after the Singapore GP, Kimi Antonelli can truly dream. The Mercedes driver leads the Formula 1 World Championship with 340 points: with six races remaining, he holds a 102-point advantage over teammate George Russell, his closest rival in the title race.
Kimi, aiming for an unthinkable goal at the start of the season, will now have to seize every opportunity to close the deal. And he could celebrate as early as two weeks from now in Austin.
Antonelli will receive his first match point at the next US Grand Prix, and to celebrate, he will have to finish the weekend with a 125-point lead over Russell.
In other words, he'll have to win and hope his teammate finishes ninth or so. For Kimi, the win in Texas would be his ninth of the season, and with five races and 125 points up for grabs, he'd be champion even if he finished tied on points, due to a higher number of Grands Prix wins.
In addition to Russell, the following are still mathematically in the running today: Lewis Hamilton (229 points), Max Verstappen (221), Charles Leclerc (215) and Lando Norris (201).
If he wins in Austin, Hamilton would have to finish in the top four to keep his mathematical chance alive, while the others would no longer have any chance. In short, the moment of truth is approaching for Kimi. He'll have to seal the deal and secure a memorable triumph.
