French protesters set fire to a tourist office in Lyon.

Lyon, October 17 (askanews) – A branch of the Lyon tourist office was vandalized and set on fire on the sidelines of nationwide demonstrations against rising living costs, as the country approaches presidential elections. The protests are increasing pressure on President Emmanuel Macron's government, following weeks of at times violent student demonstrations. There has been public criticism of the police response, which has been deemed disproportionate.

Tensions are also rising in Paris. Authorities are reporting the presence of "several hundred violent individuals, mainly linked to the far left, who are attacking law enforcement officers" by throwing objects. There has also been extensive damage to building facades. Police and gendarmes are using tear gas and conducting "dispersal charges to keep protesters at bay." By 14 p.m., 133 people had already been arrested, primarily for "gatherings intended to commit acts of violence or damage, as well as for violence against public officials."

Since this morning, 1046 preventive checks have been carried out.
